Many people are not aware that formatting a book for publication means different things depending upon the distribution of the book.
Different techniques must be incorporated for each distribution: print for Amazon, electronically for Amazon Kindle and yet another technique for electronic distribution via Smashwords.
For print, headers and footers must be used: Book Title and Author Name for the header (Author Name on even-numbered pages, Book Title on odd-numbered pages), and page numbers in the footer (even numbers on left, odd numbers on right.)
For Amazon Kindle, headers and footers need to be removed. The point size for the text throughout the document can be set as small as 9 point: Kindle readers can always enlarge the view. However, from experience I can honestly say that 9 point text is sufficient. Chapter headings, however, should be bold-faced and about 2 points larger than your text.
For Smashwords, it is imperative to set up a Table of Contents. Even if your chapters don’t have titles, your electronic version for distribution via this platform must have a TOC. And the TOC must be set up with hyperlinks manually.
Formatting in these three styles isn’t difficult, just time-consuming. Correction: it isn’t difficult once you get used to it. But when you set up these files the first couple of times, it can drive you crazy – a short but very scenic trip for some. (I no longer have to drive there: I have a parking space with my name on it.)
Anyway, it can be a knuckle-biting experience for those without the time or patience to do it.
Which is why I hung out my shingle, to help self-published authors format their books for publication.
My rates for proofreading, editing and formatting are $20 per hour. I can proofread and edit more than 20 pages per hour, bringing the rates down to less than $1 per page.
If interested, please email a request to mytuppence at yahoo.com. Please provide the following information:
Which formats you desire
Length of your document (number of pages)
Short description of the work
Deadline, if applicable
We will discuss any questions regarding the project. You can then submit the document to me as a Word or Notepad attachment.
Your files will be provided to you upon payment via PayPal.
NO PORNOGRAPHY OR SEXUALLY EXPLICIT MATERIAL PLEASE.
Other than that, I am open to most anything else.
It is a time-consuming process to format books for publication: time which you can spend working on your next writing project. Or drinking a glass of wine to celebration your book’s completion. Whatever you would like to do, allow me to take on the task while you do other things.
Think of me as the Formatting Fairy: I’ll format your book while you dream of being a successful author!
